About us
History
The dispensary that evolved into The Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, opened its doors in April 1839 and quickly became one of south east Wales’ main medical hubs. At the time, those who could afford it were encouraged to pay for their own medical treatment rather than relying on charity from others. This dispensary, providing prescriptions and medicines for the people of Newport, was funded by contributions from subscribers and working people in the town. In essence, people were encouraged to join the local health insurance scheme.
Regular meetings were held between subscribers, medical persons, MPs and clergy and soon it became known as the ‘Workmen’s Fund’ which then evolved into the organisation we know today –Gwent Hospitals Contributory Fund.
Once the NHS was set up and treatments became free for all the Fund continued to provide members with reimbursement for dental and optical treatment, prescriptions and a range of hospital care.
Today
Gwent Hospitals Contributory Fund provides a range of benefits for both individual, family and corporate members. As an organisation we have changed with the times and now include assistance with a variety of complementary treatments as well as the traditional core offering.
The organisation is run by a team of dedicated professionals headed up by chief executive officer, Andy Wilkins. The Fund also has a board of directors responsible for reviewing the performance and direction of the organisation as well as assessing major company matters.
